Art at Work
May-June 1983 Northwest Artist's Workshop, Portland, OR
Art at Work,, a seven year exploration of art and labor began as a collaboration with fellow construction worker Ted Huckins and 12 labor unions: Carpenters local 247, Laborers local296, Ironworkers local 29, Electrical Workers local 48, Operating Engineers local 701, Transit Works local 757, Bricklayers local 1, Cement Masons local 55 Sheet Metal Workers Local 18, Roofers local 49 and the Coalition of Labor Union Women.
This first Art at Work project was a multimedia presentation that included a sound installation, construction photos, oral histories, and building forms. By bringing the job site into the gallery, we offered an opportunity to see construction from the inside out and to appreciate the stories and craft of the workers.
