Alternate Arterials

June 2001 video installation with sound - Peter Whitmore

The pathways under the bustling streets are an arterial system, which roots our cities to the earth and mimics the pulsating nature of our own bodies. It is a place both familiar and mysterious. The vast subterranean system of pipes under our cities is industrial and solid in character - an array of huge steel tanks, pumps, and cement structures. Yet paradoxically, the essence of this system is rooted in the ephemeral - process, movement, and real time. The transitory and the concrete meet in the urban infrastructure.
